Sekleta, Kniahynia-Berehynia

Museum-quality, 13 in tall. Considered ""art dolls"", these limited edition dolls come with a signature card from artist and creator Olena Orekhova, who previously has only made her dolls available in select Ukrainian museums. Each doll is special and different. These traditional dolls have been made in Ukraine for centuries, and enjoyed by young and old alike. They are not only decorative, but customarily intended as protection for the home and owner. The faces of the dolls are not detailed; only indicated by crossed colored thread or ribbons. This is so that the doll will be impartial, and will not cause the owner mischief. The cross is also an ancient symbol for the sun and its power. The dolls are made with minimal sewing, mostly with cutting and tying knots. A needle and thread are used only for details on the clothing or ornamentation. Thus the term “vuzlova lialka” or “knot doll”. Materials include: straw, linen, burlap, various fabrics, wood, clay, yarns, coins, beads, and other found items. This ancient art has been perfected in the works of Olena Orehkova of Ukraine, whose works can be found in many collections and in museums. The dolls of Central Naddniprjanshchyna are particularly unique and interesting. They have an ancient look which is almost mystical, and are the image of goodness, love and hope, symbolize fertility, household abundance, and offer protection from evil forces. They are also an important link between the older and younger generations, and are often passed down from mother to children. Due to the ritual nature of the dolls, there is only occasional reference to hands, and no feet are shown. Dolls with children are reminiscent of ancient icons, and are commonly given to new mothers or young families. The large, brightly colored Kniahynja-Berehynja dolls are reserved for special occasions, and are prized by collectors. Small, simpler everyday dolls are also made, and often gifted to children. The brightly colored, large art dolls make wonderful gifts to display at home, suitable to give for holidays, weddings and birthdays. It will be a valued element in the Ukrainian home, and a precious possession.
